Laser Hair Removal for Dark and Black Skin: What Actually Matters
If you have a medium or deep skin tone, there’s a good chance someone has told you laser hair removal “isn’t for your skin.” For years that was partly true — early lasers couldn’t reliably tell hair pigment from skin pigment, and the result on darker skin could be burns, discoloration, or simply wasted money. So the caution you’ve heard has a real history behind it.
But it’s outdated. Modern lasers built for the job treat dark and Black skin safely and effectively — the entire question comes down to which laser your provider owns and how experienced they are with deeper skin tones. Here’s exactly what to know before you book anywhere.
Why the laser choice is everything
Lasers target pigment. On light skin with dark hair, the contrast is easy. On deeper skin, the laser must deliver energy to the follicle past melanin-rich skin without heating the skin itself. That takes longer wavelengths that pass through the surface safely, built-in skin cooling, and settings tuned by someone who treats deeper skin tones every week.
At Oxygen Med Spa in Orland Park we use the FDA-cleared Palomar Vectus™, designed to treat the full range of skin tones — and every new client gets a free test patch first, so you see exactly how your skin responds before committing to a single session.
Questions to ask any provider (including us)
Ask these three questions and you’ll filter out the wrong providers in five minutes. “What laser do you use, by name?” — a provider who won’t name the device is a red flag; look up whether it’s cleared for darker skin. “How often do you treat my skin tone?” — experience matters as much as equipment. “Will you do a test patch first?” — any confident provider says yes.
What results look like on darker skin
Identical goal, slightly different path: expect the same permanent reduction of up to 90% over a series, sometimes with an extra session or two because conservative, safe settings are the right call on deeper tones. Bonus most people don’t expect: laser is one of the best treatments for razor bumps and ingrown hairs (pseudofolliculitis barbae), which disproportionately affect coarse and curly hair — once the follicle stops producing hair, the bumps stop too.
What it costs
Same transparent prices as everyone else — we publish them: underarms $85, Brazilian $150, full legs $280 per session, with package discounts on 6+ sessions. See the full price list by body area.
Not sure? Start with a free consultation and test patch — see your plan, your price, and how your skin responds before you spend a dollar.

Frequently asked questions
Is laser hair removal safe for Black skin?
Yes — with the right equipment. The Palomar Vectus laser used at Oxygen Med Spa is FDA-cleared for all skin tones, including Black and brown skin, and every client starts with a free test patch to confirm settings.
Does laser hair removal help with razor bumps and ingrown hairs?
Yes. Laser hair removal is one of the most effective long-term treatments for razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) — once follicles stop producing hair, the bumps and ingrowns stop forming.
Do darker skin tones need more sessions?
Sometimes one or two more, because safe conservative settings are used. Most clients with deep skin tones still finish in the normal 6–8 session range with permanent reduction of up to 90%.
