You finished your package. Six, eight, maybe ten sessions in the books, and your skin is smoother than it’s been since puberty. Then, a year later, you notice a few stray hairs coming back — and you wonder if something went wrong, or if you got scammed on the “permanent” promise.
Neither. This is completely normal, and it has a name: maintenance sessions. Here’s what’s actually happening under the skin, and how to think about touch-ups without feeling like you’re stuck paying forever.
Why hair comes back at all
Laser hair removal targets hair that’s in its active growth phase (anagen), because that’s the only phase where the follicle has enough pigment for the laser to lock onto. At any given time, only a portion of your body’s hair is in that phase — the rest is resting or shedding. That’s the entire reason a “package” exists instead of one appointment: each session catches a new wave of hairs cycling into growth phase, and after 6–8 sessions spaced a few weeks apart, most follicles have been hit and disabled for good.
“Most” is the key word. A small percentage of follicles are naturally more resistant — thinner hair, hormonal influence, or follicles that were dormant during your whole original series. Those can wake up months or years later. That’s not a failed treatment. It’s biology finishing what statistics couldn’t guarantee the first time.
What triggers regrowth later
A few things commonly bring a handful of hairs back after you’re “done”:
Hormonal shifts — pregnancy, PCOS, menopause, or starting/stopping birth control can activate follicles that were previously inactive, especially on the chin, jawline, and abdomen.
Age — hormone patterns shift gradually over years, which is why touch-ups become more common the further out you get from your original series.
Missed follicles — density and growth cycles vary slightly by area, so a few follicles in every treatment zone are statistically likely to be under-treated the first time around, even with perfect technique.
None of these mean the original sessions “didn’t work.” They mean hair growth is a moving target, not a light switch.
How maintenance sessions actually work
This is the part people are usually relieved to hear: touch-ups are nothing like starting over.
- Frequency: most clients need a maintenance session once every 6–12 months, not every few weeks like the original series.
- Length: appointments are quick — often 10–20 minutes, since you’re treating scattered regrowth, not full density.
- Cost: touch-ups are priced per session, typically at or below your original per-session rate, and clients who purchased a package often get discounted or complimentary maintenance built in.
- Commitment: you book one when you notice regrowth, not on a locked schedule. Some clients go two full years without needing one at all.
Think of it less like “the treatment ended” and more like “the treatment moved from active phase to upkeep phase” — the same way orthodontic retainers follow braces.
How to tell if you need one
You probably need a maintenance session if you’re noticing fine, sparse regrowth in an area you previously cleared — not the same density as before, just a few hairs scattered back in. If hair is growing back thick and widespread across a treated area, that’s worth a conversation with your provider, since it’s less common and worth checking technique and settings rather than just booking another single session.
What it costs
Maintenance sessions are billed individually and priced by area, generally in line with our standard per-session pricing: underarms $85, Brazilian $150, full legs $280. If you completed a 6+ session package with us, ask about your loyalty rate on touch-ups — returning package clients often pay less than the standard single-session price.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for hair to come back after finishing a full laser hair removal package? Yes. A small percentage of follicles are naturally resistant to laser treatment or were dormant during your original series. Occasional fine regrowth months or years later is expected and doesn’t mean the treatment failed.
How often will I need a maintenance session? Most clients need one touch-up every 6–12 months. Some go two years or longer without needing one at all — it depends on hormones, area treated, and individual hair growth patterns.
Do maintenance sessions cost the same as my original package? No. They’re priced individually per session, generally at or below the standard per-area rate, and package clients often qualify for a discounted touch-up rate.
How long does a touch-up appointment take? Typically 10–20 minutes, since you’re treating scattered regrowth rather than full density.
What if hair grows back thick, not just a few stray hairs? That’s less typical and worth a conversation with your provider — it may be hormonally driven and worth discussing before your next appointment rather than just booking a routine touch-up.
